Social phobia
is also known as social anxiety disorder, and is a psychiatry
diagnosis that relates to excessive anxiety in social situations
that causes an abnormal amount of distress, and sometimes
even an impaired ability for the person to function in their
daily lives.
There are two different ways that social phobias may
be diagnosed. Social phobias may be diagnosed as specific
disorders, where only certain things cause the social
phobia reaction, and also as a generalized disorder which
is marked by a chronic, persistent and intense phobia
relating to being embarrassed, judged or humiliated based
on one's own actions. In other words, social phobia can
either be an occasional, mildly annoying reaction, or
a truly debilitating disorder that plagues the entire
daily lives of its sufferers.
What physical symptoms are associated with social phobia
and social anxiety disorder?
There are a number of physical symptoms that often accompany
the social phobia or social anxiety disorder. These physical
symptoms include but are not limited to the following:
- Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis
- Excessive blushing
- Trembling
- Nausea
- Palpitations or the ability to feel one's heartbeat
- stammering
- inability to breathe, or difficulty catching breath
- hyperventilation
The panic attacks associated with social phobia can occur
in conjunction with intense discomfort and overwhelming
fear, making them difficult to handle and even more difficult
to get away from. Some people who suffer from social phobia
are completely unable to deal with strangers, crowds,
social situations, new situations and other anxiety inducing
scenarios and situations. For this reason, it is vital
that people who are suffering from social phobia or social
anxiety seek out ways to overcome the phobia.
People who do not professionally overcome their phobia
may turn to self medicating as a means of overcoming the
fears associated with social situations and scenarios.
For example, some people may turn to drugs, cigarettes
or alcohol to reduce their stress and fears, but in many
instances this can only make things worse.
How can social phobia or social anxiety disorder be treated?
There are a number of different ways to address social
phobias, and many of the sufferers of this particular
phobia have undergone traditional psychotherapy in conjunction
with medication. However, people who are struggling with
social anxiety and social phobia issues need not rely
on this particular combination, because there is a more
effective answer out there.
NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic programming is a popular method
of alleviating the symptoms associated with phobias in
no time at all. In fact, many sufferers of previously
debilitating phobias are finding themselves at ease in
the presence of their phobia trigger in as little as twenty
minutes.
There are two different ways to use NLP to your advantage
when trying to overcome a debilitating and life altering
phobia. The first is projection booth therapy, and the
second is logical levels of therapy. Projection booth
therapy allows the patient to look down at one's self
from the projection booth of an imaginary theater. The
self in the theater faces the harmful stimuli associated
with the phobia, allowing the patient to overcome his
or her fear of it.
The "logical levels of therapy" method of treatment
allows the brain to rearrange its placement of the phobia,
making it so that the original reaction to the phobia's
stimuli is no longer the standard reaction to that stimuli.
Both of these methods of NLP treatment are extremely
effective and can begin to produce results in as little
as twenty minutes. What this means for someone who has
a debilitating phobia that disrupts their lives is that
in as little as twenty minutes, they can begin to see
relief. NLP is a powerful method of therapy that has been
around for several decades, but it is finally being recognized
for the power behind it's therapies in greatly reducing
behavioral and mental issues, especially when relating
to phobias.
